Silver Oxide
Silver Oxide is also known as Silver (I) Oxide, but should not be confused with Silver (I,III) Oxide. Silver Oxide has a chemical formula of Ag2O and appears as a fine black or dark brown powder or crystals. Other synonyms of Silver Oxide include Silver Rust, Argentic Oxide, Silver Monoxide and Argentous Oxide.
Silver Oxide is used as a component in the manufacture of Silver-Oxide batteries. It is also used as an oxidizing agent in organic chemistry and as a laboratory reagent. Silver Oxide is used in pollution control filters and to remove Carbon Dioxide from aqueous solutions in laboratory reactions. Silver Oxide is not light-sensitive to ordinary room lighting.
Silver Oxide has a number of uses as an antibacterial and antimicrobial agent. For example, it is used as an antibacterial agent in the manufacturing process of concrete. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in swimming pools, fountains and spas and in the manufacture of some infection-resistant surgical fabrics.
Silver Oxide is used by the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle to scrub Carbon Dioxide from their air. Silver Oxide is used in the same way on nuclear submarines.
Silver Oxide should be stored in its dark brown glass bottle, with the lid firmly closed. It should be stored away from sources of heat and sources of ignition. Silver Oxide is a stable material. It is an oxidiser and incompatible with most common metals, many organic materials, Magnesium and Ammonia. Avoid contact with combustible materials such as wood, paper, oil or clothing.
The dust from Silver Oxide may act as a respiratory or eye irritant. Persons working with Silver oxide should familiarise themselves with its potential hazards before commencing work. Always read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provided with the product. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including protective coveralls, safety footwear, safety gloves and approved eye protection. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of insufficient ventilation, use respiratory equipment.
Any concerns about Silver Oxide and its uses should be referred to your approved Silver Nitrate supplier who will be happy to give advice.
